The two guards both performed well in the EYBL Finals at the Nike Peach Jam 2013.
McCormick High on Local RedHawks
What else has made McCormick a fan of the RedHawks? "A Miami degree means something. That's why my mom is a big fan," he told us. The junior added, "And the campus is beautiful. The atmosphere is very professional and classy."
But the recruitment of McCormick, one of Ohio's most heralded guards, is far from over. After emerging as one of the state's best scorers during the high school season, he has continued to shine on the EYBL circuit this spring and now holds new offers from Western Kentucky, Ball State, Towson and many others. Additionally, McCormick is receiving interest from Virgina and West Virginia. He also expects to receive an offer from Tennessee when he takes an unofficial visit to Knoxville this summer.
How has the athletic scorer garnered so much attention over the past few months? First, he was showcased on SportsCenter's Top 10 in December with a tip-dunk in a rivalry game. "That was a really neat experience," he told RedHawk Insider, "it was an opportunity that so few high school students get. I was interviewed by all of the local TV stations and got to be a celebrity for a day. It was a great experience." McCormick also exploded for 42 points against Princeton HS in the playoffs, but he is more than a highlight reel player. "I think I am more than a shooter. I like to get to the lane and finish at the rim. It helps change the momentum of the game," he said. But defense is important to McCormick as well, "I like to guard the other team's best player. It sets the tone and lets me be a leader."
If the Turpin standout chooses Oxford as his college home, he expects to play point guard. McCormick said "I think I fit Coach Cooper's uptempo offense. Miami uses a lot of ball screens and I think I could use that to open up the court for everyone else." For now, the junior is going to spend his summer working in the weight room to get stronger and also become a more consistent shooter. After the AAU season ends in early July, McCormick will narrow his offers with a pros and cons list and make official visits. From there, it will be a waiting game for one of Miami's top targets in the 2014 class, but coaches and fans will be glad to know that McCormick said, "I will definitely take an official visit to Miami."
