After his sophomore season, Westlake (OH) standout Gavin Skelly had a meeting with his coaches to discuss areas to improve. The 6'9 big man had already established himself as one of the best big wings in Ohio, but his coaches wanted more assertiveness out of the forward. In his junior season, Skelly emerged as one of the highest energy and most versatile players in the state.

At 6'9 and 215 pounds, Gavin Skelly would be easy to spot on any basketball court. His sheer size and highlight reel dunks have garnered him internet popularity, but his most impressive trait may be his tenacity. "I try to give 100% energy on every play. I dive after loose balls, I go hard after rebounds. My coach has told me to calm down a few times, but I've worked hard to make the most of every minute on the court," Skelly told RedHawk Insider. And his game is certainly more well-rounded than the average high school big man. "I think I'm very versatile," Skelly said, "I like to work from the elbow, set screens and pop, and also use my height to find the open man on passes." Even more impressive to college coaches around the country, though, is his defensive ability. As a long forward, Skelly has the wing span and speed to guard every position on the court.

The hard work and coaching advice paid off this year as Skelly averaged an impressive 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists per game in his junior campaign. Since then, his recruitment has taken off and the Ohio native now holds over 15 offers from conferences such as the MAC and the Patriot League. As the AAU circuit winds down over the next month, Skelly has planned visits across the Midwest, the Northeast and the South. He anticipates receiving some high major conference offers after his campus tours.

Having visited seven schools already, Skelly is very excited about his recruitment. "They are all awesome. I am really fortunate to have so many great schools interested in me," he told RedHawk Insider. While he won't narrow down his early leaders until after his summer visits, Skelly has enjoyed his two trips to Miami. "I really loved Oxford. It was a good fit that really reminded me of Westlake," he told us. The junior hopes to study International Business and mentioned the newly built Farmer School of Business. Additionally, in a comment that has become a theme among many 2014 recruits, he said "The players were amazing, but I really love the coaching staff. We are definitely making bonds."

For now, though, college recruitment will wait for Skelly as he finishes out his AAU season and spends his free time going through college level workouts with his older brother. After his visits over the next few months, he will narrow his list and has the intention of committing by September 1st. Why so early? The impressive young man told RedHawk Insider, "Out of respect for the great schools that I don't choose, I want them to have time to find other players." That classy attitude and on-court dominance has vaulted Skelly to the top of the Miami staff's wishlist of 2014 big men.
