Cincinnati’s Greater Catholic League (GCL) has been synonymous with sending quality players to Miami. In recent years there has been Nathan Peavy (Chaminade Julian), Doug Penno (Alter), Tyler Dierkers (Moeller), Tim Schenke (Elder), Josh Hausfeld (Roger Bacon), Monty St. Clair (Roger Bacon), and Ben Helmers (Badin). The next in line could be La Salle power forward Danny McElroy.

Cincinnati’s Greater Catholic League (GCL) has been synonymous with sending quality players to Miami. In recent years there has been Nathan Peavy (Chaminade Julian), Doug Penno (Alter), Tyler Dierkers (Moeller), Tim Schenke (Elder), Josh Hausfeld (Roger Bacon), Monty St. Clair (Roger Bacon), and Ben Helmers (Badin).

The next in line to carry on that GCL lineage could be La Salle power forward Danny McElroy. Danny averaged 14.2 points and 7 rebounds as a junior for La Salle last season - both team highs and in the GCL top ten of those categories. Despite rumors of transferring from La Salle, Danny indicated he plans to stay with the Lancers.

The 6-6 McElroy has impressed on the AAU circuit this year playing for the Ohio Basketball Club (OBC). Over the weekend, he was the hero for the state of Ohio. His two free throws with seconds remaining in double overtime gave OBC the Ohio 17U AAU state championship with the 92-90 win over All-Ohio Red. He also was a significant contributor in the OBC semifinal win over the very strong All-Ohio Force which features Miami targets Bill Edwards, Allen Roberts, and Griffin McKenzie.

Since his recent decommittment to the University of Cincinnati, he has received a lot of calls from coaches. With his spring and summer play, McElroy has attracted strong interest from MAC and ACC schools. Miami, who had been following McElroy closely before his verbal to UC during his sophomore year, immediately made contact.

McElroy is interested in the following schools (in no particular order): Bowling Green, Kansas, Kent State, Miami, Oakland, USC, and Virginia. Of those, McElroy said he has offers from “Miami, Virginia, Oakland, Bowling Green, and Kent.”

In the near future, McElroy intends to take visits to Bowling Green and Kent.

McElroy said that last week he made a trip to Oxford for an unofficial visit with Miami. The visit “really went well. I had a good time.” He added, that he “really liked the coaching staff.”

Like most GCL products, academics are important to McElroy. In college, he would like to major in architecture or engineering.

As a final note, McElroy had a message to all those who have questions about his game: “You just wait and see!”
