On Friday, June 13, 2008 in Indianapolis and Sunday, June 15, 2008 in Louisville, the senior all-star teams from Kentucky and Indiana went head to head in the annual two leg series. There were two players of Miami interest playing in the two games. Playing for Indiana was 6-8 Miami signee PF Julian Mavunga from Brownsburg, Indiana. For the Kentucky side was Miami target Victor Moses. Moses is a 6-6 PF from Lexington. Moses has signed to play with Shawnee Community College and will be available to play NCAA Division I basketball as a junior in 2010. The Miami staff will likely continue to follow Moses the next two years while he is in junior college.
LEG ONE - INDIANAPOLIS MAVUNGA: Julian scored just 1 point in about 8 minutes of play. He was backing up starting center Tyler Zeller. The 6-10 Zeller won the Indiana Mr. Basketball award and has signed with North Carolina. Zeller played the first and last 8 minutes of each half with Mavunga playing the middle 4 minutes. In his 4 minutes in the first half, Mavunga never touched the ball – not even to make an inbound pass. In the second half, Mavunga got into the action. After receiving the only pass he would get in the entire game, he made an nice back to the basket spin and shot a 5-foot jumper over three defenders. Although he missed, it was an impressive move nonetheless. Mavunga grabbed 4 rebounds including 1 offensive rebound that he went back up with and drawing a foul. He made 1 of the 2 free throws. Mavunga’s highlights came on the defensive end where he took two charges by driving Kentucky players. The partisan Indiana crowd of 5,000+ was impressed enough by his defense in those 4 minutes that he received a nice hand when Zeller came in to replace him with 8 minutes left in the game. MOSES: Moses did some damage for Kentucky. In 18 minutes of play, he scored 8 points on 4 of 6 shooting. Moses played hard. His hustle helped him grab 3 offensive rebounds (4 total).
LEG TWO - LOUISVILLE MAVUNGA: It appears Mavunga again backed up Zeller and likely played the middle 4 minutes of each half (Mavunga 9 mins to Zeller 31). Mavunga went 2 for 2 from the field and 1 for 1 from the line to earn 5 points. He also had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. MOSES: Moses scored a point a minute – 16 points in 16 minutes of play. He went 7 of 10 shooting and 2 of 2 from the line. He also had 3 rebounds (2 offensive). |
